The Department of Sacred Union and Matrimony within Wikitori IWI oversees and administers all matters related to marriage, including both poly marriages and monogamous unions, within the Yahcalo Ndigena Nation. The department is committed to honoring and upholding the cultural and spiritual practices of the Nation while respecting diverse forms of partnership as recognized by Yahcalo Ndigena traditions.
Responsibilities
Cultural Marriage Ceremonies:
Organizes and officiates traditional Yahcalo Ndigena marriage ceremonies, including both polyamorous and monogamous unions, in accordance with tribal customs.
Provides guidance to couples in preparing for marriage, offering spiritual blessings and ensuring that the ceremony reflects the cultural values of the Yahcalo Ndigena Nation.
Marriage Licensing and Registration:
Issues official tribal marriage licenses for both poly and monogamous unions and maintains a registry of all unions conducted under the authority of Wikitori IWI.
Recognizes both traditional and intertribal marriages, ensuring that each union is respected and protected under the laws of the Yahcalo Ndigena Nation.
Cultural Premarital Counseling:
Offers counseling sessions to help couples align their union with Yahcalo Ndigena cultural values, regardless of whether they choose a polyamorous or monogamous marriage structure.
Prepares couples to build strong, culturally conscious families, respecting the importance of family dynamics, spiritual commitment, and community welfare.
Support for Poly Marriages and Monogamy:
Provides support and guidance to individuals and families in both poly and monogamous marriages, ensuring that the principles of mutual respect, shared responsibility, and cultural integrity are upheld in all forms of partnership.
Recognizes the diversity of marital structures within the Yahcalo Ndigena Nation, fostering inclusivity while upholding the tribe’s values of family and cultural heritage.
Dispute Resolution and Marital Support:
Offers mediation and counseling services for married couples in poly or monogamous marriages, helping them resolve conflicts and maintain healthy relationships rooted in cultural and spiritual practices.
Ancestral Heritage Protection:
Ensures that all marriages—whether poly or monogamous—are aligned with the heritage and traditions of the Yahcalo Ndigena Nation, maintaining the integrity of family lineage and ancestral connections.
